Symptoms are varied but usually include hair loss and severe itching especially on the areas of the skin that have less hair such as ears, armpits, belly, chest and hocks. These mites invade the healthy skin and cause a wide range of skin conditions. – Sarcoptic mites, also known as red mange or scabies are the nastier of the mites and live deep in the skin. Symptoms include bacterial skin infection and pustules caused by excessive scratching, and bald patches especially around the front legs, eyes, mouth, and elbows. Demodex is most common in young dogs in adult dogs cases are associated with dogs that are stressed from disease, poor nutrition, immune disorders or live in a harsh environment. – Demodex mites live and reproduce just under the skin surface in the tiny hair follicles and the oil glands of the skin. Symptoms in dogs include flaky skin, scratching, small skin bumps, scabs, mild hair loss, and if the mites enter the nose sneezing and scratching of the face. These mites are common in dogs and can live on humans for a short while causing an itchy rash. – Cheyletiella mites (also called Walking Dandruff) feed off dead skin cells and live on the surface of the skin. OTHER PARASITES include Sarcoptic mites, Demodex mites, and Cheyletiella mites. Click here for details on natural tick prevention methods. If your dog is experiencing these signs a visit to the vet is recommended. Some dogs are sensitive to tick saliva secretion and develop a rash, swelling, or shortness of breath. After removing a tick always cleanse the place of a tick bite with an antibacterial solution (take care around the eyes) and monitor the area for a few days. Most tick bites do not transmit harmful microbes, however as the threat of disease is always present ticks should be taken seriously. However after the tick has been removed or falls off the skin the site of the bite may become red, inflamed and itchy. TICKS: Ticks themselves do not cause itching and the bite is usually painless. Unless you have a full blown flea infestation or a dog suffering from parasitic dermatitis there are alternative natural methods to help your canine companion prevent and combat against these unwanted visitors. Dogs suffering from parasitic dermatitis can be completely free from fleas on inspection due to it grooming itself or because it only takes one bite to start an allergic reaction. Flea allergy dermatitis mostly manifests as severe itching on the back near the tail, inside of the hind legs, the abdomen and the sides of the abdomen. Repeated exposure to flea bites can cause hypersensitivity to the proteins in flea saliva. There are a wide range of causes that affect an itchy dog, and different ways of treating them.įLEAS: In addition to flea bites causing itchiness fleas can also cause parasitic dermatitis. To rid a dog of this misery you have to identify the source of the problem to effectively treat it and prevent future recurrences. As a dogs skin is indicative of its overall health, constant itching and scratching is a symptom of an underlying problem. One of the biggest asks from dog owners is how do they stop their pet from constantly scratching. 9/11/2023 0 Comments Edwin drood musicalThe day before I met with him, I wrote at the top of the page "Victorian Vaudeville." And instantly all the fun and giddiness, and quirkiness of the framing device, poured out of me onto the page. RH: The idea of a company of actors came to me when I first wrote my presentation for Joe Papp. Only having known it from the cast album, I had no idea that the show incorporated such a rich, period world where a company of actors endeavors to tell us Dickens' tale. It was a treat for me to see Drood at long last. Because, to me, entering the theatre, that would be the absolute height of theatricality, and would do something, especially in those days, that could not be done in any other medium - that of the actors knowing the audience is there and the audience collaborating with the company to create an ending. Instead, I would find some way to allow the audience to vote on several of the questions raised in the plot, and have the possibility of a different outcome at every performance. Then there came the thought of, "How do I deal with the fact that it's an unfinished work?" And within a day or two of first considering the show as the subject of a musical, I hit upon the idea that I would not try to do my mock-Dickensian ending. I thought it would make a terrific musical because John Jasper is a choir master and organist, and he's madly in love with his muse and pupil, so I knew he would have every reason to write her a song for her birthday that would put into her mouth the word he longed for her to speak to him. RH: I first had the thought about making a musical of "Edwin Drood" as far back as 1971. Had The Mystery of Edwin Drood been on your mind at that point? It was as if someone finally picked up the message I was trying to send which was, "Please, let me find a way into musical theatre." They went to the club and sent me a New York Shakespeare Festival card that said, "Have you thought about writing a musical? If so, we should talk." Of course I had, and the idea was Edwin Drood. That was 1983 and Gail Merrifield Papp, who was also aware of my albums, as was Joe Papp, read a good review that Stephen Holden wrote. To some degree I think I was trying to wave my arms frantically at musical theatre and say, "Look over here, I tell stories!" Eventually, it clicked when I was performing at Dangerfields doing comedy and music as a headliner there. But it wasn't until my album "Partners in Crime" that I actually had a couple of top ten hits.īetty Buckley in the original Broadway production of The Mystery of Edwin Drood.Ī lot of my early career, I wrote story songs that had narratives, that had plots. The cover versions of my songs that were being recorded are what kept me in the running. I think that alone caused CBS to renew my contract for several years. They only manufactured 10,000 copies, I wasn't even in the running for failure! But one of those albums found its way to Barbra Streisand, and she suddenly wanted to record my songs, and have me arrange and conduct them. But thankfully, my first album, "Wide Screen," was sort of a critics' darling - everyone raved about it, but no one bought it. I wouldn't have gotten to make a fifth album. In today's music industry, I wouldn't have lasted that long. People think the first record I ever made had the "Pina Colada Song" on it. I know that you're best known for "Escape (The Piña Colada Song)," but I am such a huge fan of the songs "Him," "Partners in Crime," "Wide Screen," "Who, What, When, Where Why" and "Answering Machine." That is some great pop writing and storytelling. Rupert, before we get to Drood, I have to tell you that a friend turned me on to your solo studio albums from the 1970s and 80s. We also look back at his career as a singer-songwriter. caught up with Holmes to discuss revisiting Drood for this fresh production, his new revisions, and some of the initial inspirations for the musical. Drood's rousing and intricate period score has been preserved anew thanks to a lavishly packaged two-disc revival cast album from DRG Records, which was released in late January. Thirty years after it premiered in Central Park at the Delacorte Theater under the wing of the New York Shakespeare Festival (now the Public Theater), Rupert Holmes' Tony-winning musical The Mystery of Edwin Drood is enjoying a vivacious revival by the Roundabout Theatre Company at Studio 54. 9/10/2023 0 Comments Chaperone person“We hope this (chaperone imbalance) model will help us better understand the dynamics of tau aggregation and neuroinflammation, including the timing and connections among pathological events, without directly regulating one pathway or the other,” Dr. However, they tend to be limited in capturing the physiological aspects of neurodegeneration in the context of both normal and abnormal aging. This was complemented by loss of neurons and cognitive impairments.Įxisting mouse models, including those that add or subtract genes, introduce tau mutations, and seed mice brains with human tau, help scientists learn more about the underlying causes of Alzheimer’s disease and other tauopathies. The tau accumulation promoted by overexpression of FKBP52, but not Aha1, correlated with increased neuroinflammation through exaggerated activation of neuronal support cells, namely microglia and astrocytes. High levels of FKBP52, and to a lesser extent elevated levels of Aha1, increased tau accumulation over time in the aged, wild-type mice.Key findings from their new mouse model of tauopathy include: | Image courtesy of Laura Blair laboratory, USF Health Tau pathology resembling that seen in Alzheimer’s disease brains. So, the USF Health team investigated whether increased levels of FKBP52 and Aha1 alone could initiate pathological features mimicking human Alzheimer’s disease in aged wild-type mice – those with no genetic manipulations predisposing their brains to abnormally increase tau aggregation. Increasing age is the greatest known risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease. Large numbers of the chaperone molecules decrease in expression, and a smaller but significant number increase in their expression,” Dr. “But in the aging brain, the balance of the chaperone proteins shifts and creates a system not working as efficiently as it normally would. Heat shock proteins like Hsp90, triggered when a cell is under stress, play a particularly important “triage” role in correcting protein misfolding to prevent aggregation. | Photo by Allison LongĪmong their many quality-control functions, chaperone protein networks ensure proteins are folded to conform to the proper 3D shapes, transported precisely where needed to do their jobs, and pushed toward degradation if they are abnormally modified or no longer useful. Blair along with the research paper’s co-lead authors Marangelie Criado-Marrero, PhD (left), a postdoctoral fellow, and Niat Gebru (center), a doctoral student. “We’re excited about using this new model of tauopathy in finding ways to restore chaperone protein balance to delay or stop the progression of Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative diseases.”ĭr. “The chaperone protein network is your cell’s natural defense to maintain homeostasis throughout life, and this study emphasizes the importance of protecting that balance in the aging brain,” said principal investigator Laura Blair, PhD, an assistant professor of molecular medicine at the USF Health Byrd Alzheimer’s Center, Morsani College of Medicine. Normally, co-chaperone proteins assist chaperone proteins in monitoring and sustaining the balance (homeostasis) of proteins critical to cell health. Hsp90 is a chaperone protein abundant in neurons and other cells in the brain. The findings, highlighted below, were reported April 8 in Acta Neuropathologica Communications. They modeled molecular chaperone imbalance by overexpressing production of Aha1 and FKBP52 in these old, wide-type mice. In this study the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine researchers used mice that were not genetically modified (wild-type mice) to examine the effects of Aha1 and FKBP52, two co-chaperone proteins of heat shock protein Hsp90, in the aging brain. In humans, misfolding of the protein tau leads to its toxic accumulation inside brain cells, the formation of these tau aggregates into hallmark neurofibrillary tangles, neuron death, and eventually symptoms of cognitive decline such as memory loss and diminished thinking skills.
